The Partial Replacement of TIO2 by Calcium Carbonate in HDPE Film, 2000 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
Allison R. Calhoun, Deeba M. Ansari--Titania (TiO2) is used as an opacifier in many polymer applications, including polyolefin films. Consumer products, such as shopping bags and trash bags often comprise single or multilayer pigmented films, with TiO2 added for colour and opacity. Interest has been expressed in partially replacing TiO2 with calcium carbonate, without significantly changing these properties.
This paper details the effect of replacing TiO2 by two coated calcium carbonate grades in high density polyethylene (HDPE) films. Pigmentation levels were low, giving translucent rather than opaque films. Films with similar opacity and colour could be achieved by partially replacing TiO2 with the coarser calcium carbonate grade. Complete replacement, however, led to a reduction in both properties.
