Set-Time and Open-Time Properties of Hot-Melt Adhesives, 1990 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
Set-time and open-time properties are important considerations when selecting and trouble shooting hot-melt adhesives. Because these adhesives typically set within a few seconds of compression, manual test methods are not typically capable of providing meaningful results.
For improved precision, a novel testing device was developed which is capable of measuring set-time potential to the nearest tenth-of-a-second. Through the use of a statistical test method, meaningful comparisons can be made between various test conditions, without excessive testing.
In this paper, an overview will be presented of the test method and how selected variables affect open and set-time properties.
