Some Problems in the Numerical Simulation of Coextrusion Flows, 1990 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Numerical simulations of polymer melt flows through coextrusion equipment are gaining a greater importance. Due to the complexity of such problems several numerical approaches are possible. Here we present some difficulties encountered in the numerical simulation of coextrusion flows, such as non-linearity, iterative scheme, convergence, etc.. Rigorous approaches based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) are briefly com-pared to techniques using the Lubrication Approximation Theory (LAT) which gives an approximate fast solution since by reducing the system into a locally one-dimensional problem.
