Disposal Issues in Healthcare Packaging, 1990 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
Regulations protecting the public and the environment have translated into increased costs for the handling and disposal of infectious or regulated medical waste as well as all other waste streams. The all too real landfill crisis should discourage excessive packaging. Increasing product costs coupled with increasing disposal costs have stimulated healthcare facilities to demand from manufacturers, solutions for the growing waste streams.
Since healthcare packaging may be diverted to either the infectious or regular solid waste stream, the environmental impact of packaging materials buried in landfills or destroyed through incineration needs to be equally addressed. Source reduction strategies, as well as the use of recycling or recyclable materials in healthcare packaging should offer several viable avenues in the 90’s.
