Factors Affecting Latent Catalyst Activity for Melamine Formaldehyde Resin, 1990 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
Factors affecting latent catalyst activity toward melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resins were studied to determine the practical range of activities obtainable. Hydrochloric, phosphoric, toluenesulfonic and acetic acids were investigated both alone and in combination with either morpholine or triethylamine (TEA). Sunshine gel times (SGTs) at 135 degrees C. stroke cures at 135 degrees C and 100 degrees C opacity times (OT) were determined to give a cure profile of the various catalysts. Water dilutability was measured over time as an indicator of pot life. The weaker base, morpholine, led to more active catalysts and the activity of these catalysts usually followed acid strength. TEA containing catalysts also had higher activation temperatures, as judged by the difference between OT and SGT, and had improved pot lives.
