Designing Water Based Polymers for Non-Porous Substrates, 1990 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Many resins used in water based inks for non-porous substrates are based on styrene/ acrylic polymer technology. A discussion of emulsion polymerization and the differences between solutions and emulsions lays the groundwork for characterization of polymers by glass transition temperature, surface energy and molecular weight. Two stage polymerizations utilizing resins as surfactants, and monomers with applicable properties to films and foils are also investigated. Water based chemistry that goes beyond conventional styrene/acrylic emulsion polymerization is explored for future developments.
