A large production run of flame treated milk carton stock exhibited erratic and inconsistent sealing capability. A complete series of heat, clamp and instantaneous tension tests under laboratory conditions validates sealing difficulties discovered in production run. Extensive testing using Analytic Spectroscopy, Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA), and Optical Photomicrography fails to isolate the elusive hydrocarbon contaminant believed to be causing the problem. Several methods of surface cleaning and modification are tested and corona treating is determined to affect surface characteristics sufficiently to permit consistent sealing.
