Effect of Corona Discharge onto Polymer Films, 1991 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
Corona treatment has long been used as a primary technique to promote adhesion between ink or polymer coating to a polymer film substrate. There are several mechanisms occurring simultaneously during corona treatment which compete against each other and complicate the analysis of fundamental mechanisms responsible for the benefits
derived from corona treatment.
There has been much research around this subject and most literature either oversimplifies the reactions and mechanisms that occur during corona treating, often clouding and mystifying what really happens, or it spends an inordinate amount of time on one particular react ion mechanism without fully considering all physical and polymer chemistry effects. This paper will endeavor to uncover the most basic reactions and mechanisms which take place in the few milliseconds that the moving plastic web is exposed to high energy corona plasma.
