Maintaining high quality impressions on poly and metallized webs at production level line speeds requires a controlled balance between substrate surface characteristics and ink chemistry to meet both production goals and environmental regulations. Although substrate surface tension is the most obvious characteristic that requires measurement and control, recent anecdotal evidence leads to the conclusion that characteristics beyond surface tension play a role in both wettability and adhesion. The key element in successful water-based printing is not the level of surface treating alone, but how the resin supplier, ink supplier and surface treatment equipment supplier can work together to provide the print characteristics sought by the converter.
