Pressure sensitive adhesives for use in food packaging and labeling must meet the compositional requirements of various Food and Drug Administration regulations. Water-borne pressure sensitive adhesives are at a disadvantage due to the large number of ingredients present, such as nonomers, surfactants, defoamers, chain transfer agents, buffers and various formulating ingredients. Removable water-borne pressure sensitive emulsions meeting the compositional requirements of 21 CFR 176.180 have been developed in our laboratories and their performance characteristics have been determined by PSTC tests as well as adhesion to numerous substrates of practical interest. Blending of two compatible removables at opposite ends of the removability spectrum shows promise for obtaining desired intermediate performance levels. Dynamic mechanical analysis data confirms the compatibility of various blends.
