On Line Curl Measurement and Control, 1993 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Eric T. Langevin, William Giguere--Currently papermakers and convertors must wait until the end of a reel before determining if unacceptable curl is present in the product being manufactured. This can translate into lost production before a problem is detected. A new device has been developed which enables the manufacturer to monitor edge curl continuously without the need for stopping and taking samples. The Curl Line 2000 combines a laser, a line generator and a digital camera to constantly measure edge curl and display a graphical representation of the curl on the system control screen. This information can be used to manually adjust the process to correct the curl or it can be transmitted to a process controller which will automatically adjust a de-curling device.

The device, its features and the results obtained in various applications are presented.
