The film properties obtained from the blown film process are the result of interactions of the polymer molecular structure with the orientation and crystallinity induced into the film during bubble forming and quenching. The fabrication variables studied were blow-up-ratio (BUR), die gap, frost line height (FLH), and output rate The thermal characterization and deformational analysis of the bubble were used to determine the influence of fabrication variables on film properties. The methods of measuring the crystallization line, the frost line, and the freeze line of the blown film bubble are described. The process variables were found to correlate to critical film properties of a new experimental (next generation) linear low density polyethylene (NG-LLDPE) film resin that was designed to provide improved bubble stability and reduced sensitivity to melt fracture.
