What is a High Barrier Package?, 1993 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
H. A. Dirienzo
For many years, high barrier packaging was dominated by glass and metal with properties which overshadowed those of plastics. Because of the relatively recent advances in polymer and processing technology, together with new equipment development, the entire complexion of the packaging industry has changed.
High barrier polymers and new advanced processing techniques have opened many markets which are now being serviced by plastic packaging and programs in development indicate an even brighter future.
The term “high barrier” will be defined and high barrier examples will be reviewed. The properties of various high barrier structures will be discussed in addition to current and developing applications.
