New Look at Melt Fracture in Linear Low Density Polyethylene, 1993 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

L. T. Kale, D. Hager

Historically, melt fracture or surface defects on extruded thermoplastics have been characterized visually. However, given this very subjective visual process it is difficult to establish correlations between the onset of surface defects and processing conditions or molecular structure. In this study the development of surface defects on linear low density polyethylene was investigated using an on-line fibre optic surface analyzer. The fibre optic probe transmits light from a laser and illuminates a small area on a moving polyethylene surface, a fraction of the light scattered from the surface is collected by a second optical fibre and analysed. Multivariate pattern recognition techniques were used to distinguish between the different types of surface flow defects.
