Post-Die Effects on Sharkskin Melt Fracture of LLDPE, 1993 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Sharkskin melt fracture is a commonly encountered problem in the blown film extrusion of LLDPE. While it is known to be primarily governed by stresses at the exit of the die, processes downstream of the die may also influence the final film appearance. In this study, film blowing variables such as frost-line height, blow-up ratio and film gauge are varied in addition to melt temperature and output rate. The observed effects are rationalized in terms of the post-die stretching and relaxation processes during film blowing.
