Several surface characterization techniques have been utilized for flame and corona post treatments of extrusion coated low density polyethylene. Surface tensions have been measured with standard dyne solutions. These industry standard measurements were then compared to acid and base solution contact angles, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and angle-resolved XPS (ARXPS). Oxygen levels have been reported for the surface and into the polyethylene structure. Hot tack and heat seal data has also been reported comparing the different types of surface treatments.
