The paper converting industry has been aware of composting as a technology for decades. However, in the past two years, large scale commercial composting projects have gained more credibility as a viable solid waste management option. This paper will review the recent evolution of standard test methodology for evaluating "compostability" of packaging materials, then present the results of some initial work focused on quantifying the compostability of four dual ovenable paperboard structures (with and without PET) tested under these newly established protocols.
