History of Polyethylenes as Coatings for Milk Cartons, 1996 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
By 1960, milk cartons, coated with medium density polyethylenes (MDPE’s), were a commercial reality. Almost 40 years later, milk cartons are coated with low density polyethylenes. However, the carton performance requirements are the same now as they were then: pinhole resistance; strong heat seals; good hot tack; and low coefficient of friction. The history of the transition from medium density coatings to low density polyethylene coatings gives an interesting insight into the relationship of polyethylene physical properties to carton performance.
