My TAPPI Story: Eupidio Scopel
A newly-developed modified protein, methacrylated gelatine, was tested to determine its suitability as a pre-polymer to set up a barrier layer for flexible packaging materials. Cross linking was carried out by electron irradiation, coatings were analytically characterized with respect to residual double bonds and radiolysis products. Properties relevant to the use as a barrier layer and adhesive of the cross-linked material such as oxygen and water permeability, printability and global migration were determined. Biodegradability of cross-linked films was tested.
