Winding of films which are made by means of blown or flat film extrusion is an important auxiliary operation in extrusion processes. In order to make a film roll of uniform package diameter the winding shaft should not have any deflection at all in the ideal case. However, owing to the weight of the plastics film or any other material wound the shaft experiences a deflection which can again be compensated by counter bending the roll. By using finite element analysis the roll deflection can be accurately determined as a function of the load on the roll. The counter bending forces required to minimise the deflection are obtained in this work from the FE-Analysis, and are used as input to the antibending system which is a part of the winding equipment.
