Polylactic Acid: Versatile Engineerable Material, 1997 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Polylactic acid (PLA) resin (polylactide) is a new polymer platform that shows unique thermal process behaviors. This material may be engineered into fibers, injection molded parts and film forms. PLA is a true thermoplastic (aliphatic polyester) made from renewable resource. Existing process equipment useful in the fabrication of materials such as PE, PVC, PS and Nylon may be employed for PLA processing. This paper will discuss PLA and its process behaviors.
