Enhanced Adhesion of Polyester Coatings, 1997 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Polyester is commonly used in extrusion coating applications requiring high heat resistance and/or excellent barrier properties. However, one of the drawbacks commonly encountered in polyester-coated substrates is the difficulty in achieving sufficient bond strengths to the substrates onto which the polyester is coated. This drawback is usually overcome by increasing the coating thickness and/or by decreasing the coating line speed. Fortunately, another option is to treat the substrate with an FDA-approved primer, namely, a water dispersible polyester. As this paper will address, use of a water dispersible polyester as a primer can increase the adhesion of polyester coatings from near zero to values well above the minimum acceptable ranges for most extrusion coated packaging applications.
