Blending Different Molecular Weight Distributions: Its Effect on Extrusion Coating, 1997 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

In extrusion coating, polyethylenes of different molecular weight distributions (MWD’s) require different extrusion conditions to provide thin coatings. Those with broad MWD’s coat to their thinnest at lower extruder output rates and slower line speeds. Those with narrow MWD’s draw down best at higher extruder outputs and faster line speeds. Blends of the two MWD extremes show interesting coating performances.
