Advances in the Masterbatches for the Polyolefin Industry, 1997 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

The polymer industry has grown leaps and bounds over last three decades. This growth has been fueled by the new applications as well as the development of new raw materials. The use of colors has enhanced the appeal of the plastics. The extrusion coating industry as well as the cast film industry has grown fast and taken advantage of the colors. The raw pigments are very difficult to handle and also make the house keeping difficult and tedious. The use of color and additive masterbatches has increased because it not only addresses the difficult handling but also provides the film manufacturer flexibility as well as cost reduction compared to the precolored polymers. Ampacet was the first company to introduce the idea of using color concentrates to the extrusion coating industry in the late 60’s.

In this paper we are going to present the development of a versatile white concentrate for extrusion coating and utilization of black concentrates for the photographic industry. The development of the new polymers using the single site metallocene catalysts is adding excitement to all the users and its application will also be discussed.
