Use of Ethylene Plastomers to Improve Polyethylene Films, 1997 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Although many commercial film packaging applications employ the unique attributes of metallocene-catalyzed ethylene plastomers by using them as pure components, the fastest growing use for ethylene plastomers is in polymer modification, especially for film packaging applications. In polymer modification, a relatively small amount, typically 20-40%, of a plastomer is added to a conventional polyolefin to enhance a specific set of properties, usually heat sealing and/or toughness performance. Two previous papers described how blending a small amount of an ethylene plastomer into conventional LLDPEs, HP-LDPEs, EVAs, and even mLLDPE yields significant improvement in their blown film properties. This paper expands on those studies, focusing on specific film attributes, such as hot tack strength and toughness, to give further definition to the proper selection of the ethylene plastomer for a given application.
