Nylon 6 Barrier Coextrusions A Cost-Effective Packaging Route, 1998 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
Coextrusion is now the dominant, cost-effective technique for producing barrier plastic packaging films. it allows for the thinnest possible layers of individual resins within the construction. Nylon 6 is an essential layer in barrier packaging film in that it is/has (1) cost effective, (2) high strength/durability and, (3) good barrier to aroma/flavors. A thin layer ‘of Nylon 6 will add strength and barrier to the construction. Nylon 6 is also easily thermoformable, easily combined with polyolefms and other resins, preconsumer recyclable, functions in high/low temperature environments and meets FDA requirements for food contact.
Markets where nylon coextnrsions play a major role - processed meat, fresh meat, cheese, and other markets such as dry foods, pet food, bubble wrap, and mailers will be discussed. Typical structures and major converters/end-users will be identified.
