Mixing Screws Versus Non-Mixing Screws, Part I: The Experiment, 1998 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
A mixing screw was compared to a non-mixing screw to determine their individual effects on the processing properties and coating properties of polyethylenes. This study is presented in two papers:
Part I (This paper). Describes the materials tested, the equipment, and the extrusion conditions.
Part II. Gives the results of this experimental study. It presents the effects of the two screw designs on extrusion processability; coating properties; and the dispersion of an inert additive, letdown from a highly loaded concentrate.
Data, to be presented in Part II, will show that mixing screws are better used when dispersing inert additives, or possibly in the simultaneous blending and extrusion of dissimilar polymers, e.g. low density and high density polyethylenes. If one is extruding a pre-blended formulation, a mixer is apparently not needed.
