New Technology Replacing Traditional Gel Lacquer EVA-Based Heat Seal Coatings, 1998 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Three important advances have led to new product options for converters interested in discontinuing the use of HAP*-solvent gel lacquer heat seal coatings (HSC’s). These include (1) the availability of a new, HAP-free solvent designed to replace toluene in EVA-based formulations, (2) new formulation techniques that result in easier to handle modified polyolefin ambient liquid HSC’s, and (3) the development of EVA-based copolymer extrudable resins that perform effectively in traditional solution coating applications.

These advances have led to new solvent-based and extrudable resin HSC options that - in combination with continuously improving waterborne EVA heat seal coating technology -provide converters with new opportunities to improve environmental compliance, handling safety, efficiency and convenience in the application of EVA-based heat seal coatings.
