Inhibition of Migration of Contaminants from Paper into Packaged Foods, 1998 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Recycled liner has become more commonplace in the paper stream and with it comes the potential for contamination of food packaged with paper that uses such recycled material. This study investigated the inhibitory effectiveness of water based recyclable functional coatings applied to liner towards two different types of contaminants-- lead (as an example of an inorganic contaminant) and gram negative bacteria (as an example of an organic contaminant). Results indicated that these functional coatings were extremely effective in inhibiting the uptake of the impurity investigated.
