Effect of Coextrusion on the Hot-Tack Performance of a Comon Ionomer Resin, 1998 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
Ionomer resins are well known in the packaging industry as the premiere sealant for challenging heat seal applications. Their application in coextrusion coated heat seal layers is examined in this paper. Coextrusion is of interest for reducing the total cost of a sealant coating, but also for upgrading the performance of polyethylene sealant applications. Three basic coextrusions are examined: coextrusion with an acid copolymer resin, coextrusion with a low density polyethylene, and coextrusion with a metallocene polyethylene. In each case, the sacrifice or increase in performance is documented, and some potential applications are discussed.
