A die line is a streak or mark in a coating that is caused by a build-up of residue in or on the extrusion die. Die lines arc common in the extrusion coating and film industry and result in costly unscheduled shutdowns for shimming and cleaning the die. During 1996, a project was initiated to investigate the poor die line performance with a titanium dioxide filled polyethylene concentrate. As a result of this study, a lab scale test was developed to predict relative die line performance, and several polyethylene concentrates were developed with significant improvements in die line performance. Using a reformulated titanium dioxide concentrate, the time before die line formation was extended from 1 hour with the original formula to greater than 20 hours.
