Middle Period of Skin and Aging Technology, 1998 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

“Skin” or surface functionality plays a major roll in flexible packaging converting. Whether the property is adhesion, chill roll contact or slip development, virtually every phase of extrusion coating technology involves the elements of skin properties.

And aging can be good or bad. Acid copolymers on foil; “curing” adhesives; and ink drying are examples of good things that involve time for the development of properties. The bad aspects include loss of treatment with time, product resistance and moisture sensitivity of some materials. So a property change with time - aging - depends on how it is viewed and handled. Technology advances are continuous. But they are based on fundamentals. In keeping with the theme of this session, we have summarized some of the ancient work which advanced converting improvements - and remains evergreen. The limits we have put on the summaries are:

- all the authors were employed by our company.

- only TAPPI papers given more than 15 years ago are included.

- virtually every paper has some element of “skin” or “aging” in it.

- most summaries have “key words” or topics identified so a reader can take a quick look and select an item of interest.

- six subject headings have been selected: materials, extrusion process, adhesion, the nip, end use, and coextrusion. Each short summary has a number - if you want a copy, identify the paper of that number and advise one of our people.
