Effects of Polyolefin Formulation and Processing Variables on Slip Agent Performance, 1999 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Adam Maltby, Croda Universal Ltd, Oak Road, Hull HU6 7PH, UK

Slip or friction at a polyolefin surface is governed by many factors. In materials which inherently have a high Coefficient of Friction (CoF), or poor slip, the major effect will be caused by the addition of a slip agent. Slip agents, the most important class of which are fatty acid amides, work by migrating to the surface of the polymer and forming a layer or layers along which there is a reduced resistance to sliding. The slip performance of these additives is influenced by many factors including the measurement method, amide type, its purity, polymer type, the presence of other additives, processing conditions, storage conditions and in service conditions.
