Static electricity on the surface of a polymer film can cause the film to be unsuitable for use in electronics packaging, areas containing flammable atmospheres, or just attract dust making a product less attractive on the store shelf.
Antistats are used to modify the static electric behavior of polymer surfaces. They function principally by attracting moisture to the surface of the polymer. This moisture layer reduces the electrical resistivity of the surface. This paper will cover the nature of static charges, mechanism of action of antistats, test methods, and test standards.
Also discussed will be issues related to FDA requirements for the finished part, chemical compatibility with the polymer, chemical compatibility with the part’s end use, and of course, cost. Mixing and processing in your plant will also be discussed.
