High Velocity Flame Surface Treatment has long been used in pretreatment of paperboard prior to extrusion coating and in the post-treatment of polymer prior to printing. This paper will address the objectives of surface treatment, briefly comparing High Velocity Flame Surface Treatment to the treatment afforded by corona discharge and conventional ribbon burner systems. This paper will also discuss the degree to which changes in flame intensity, fuel mix, and web speed affect the treatment produced by a High Velocity Flame Surface Treatment System.
