Metal packaging has been used for extended shelf life for many years. Plastics packaging offers more convenience, greater environmental friendliness but fails in the ability to achieve the desired 36 months of shelf life even with the use of modern barrier polymers. Active barrier ackaging, the combination of oxygen barrier layers with oxygen scavenging, will be the leading packaging technology for the 21st century. This paper discusses the evolution of rigid high barrier food packaging which incorporates the new generation of oxygen scavengers.
