Pellet melt index is an unreliable predictor of a polyethylene’s performance in extrusion coating. And here’s why most people in the industry assume that pellet melt index will predict (a) the processability of
a polyethylene during extrusion coating, and (b) certain coating properties. Pellet melt index would do this if it remained constant during extrusion. But, to the contrary, a polyethylene’s coating melt index will vary significantly and irreversibly from that of the original pellet during any extrusion operation. These translate to variations in coating properties.
