My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
Panos Cocolios, François Coeuret, Jean-Louis Gelot and Alain Villermet, Echkard Prinz and Frank Förster--Surface treatment of polymer films and of metallic foils by means of an electrical discharge at 1 atm pressure, in a gaseous mixture containing nitrogen, silane (SiH4) and an oxygen containing gaseous molecule, leads to the deposition of a thin silica (SiO2) layer to the surface of the substrate. Whatever the substrate, the modified surfaces have similar composition and morphology regardless of the nature of the substrate. This universal surface allows, among other things, the use of the same type of coating formulation, for example an ink formulation, to any substrate. Treatment results of various substrates will be presented, as well as successful converting operations, supporting the concept of the universal surface obtained by treatment of a polymeric or of a metallic substrate with the ALDYNE TM process.
