Jakob Lange, Haroun Mokdad and Yves Wyser--In many applications, packaging laminates are subject to damage by penetration, leading to possible loss of barrier properties, package integrity and product quality. To be able to respond to this situation, it is important to understand the mechanism of perforation in flexible laminates. It is also necessary to define relevant methods for experimentally assessing the puncture resistance. This paper presents the development of such a method in terms of probe geometry and test parameters for the case of packaging for dehydrated culinary products. Using this method, examples of the influence of laminate composition and testing direction on puncture resistance are then given. The results show that the position of a layer in a laminate as well as the presence of thin coatings such as a print layer can have a large influence on the puncture behaviour.
