Rodgers--Many packaged consumer goods are sensitive to oxygen degradation and therefore efforts have been made to reduce the oxygen inside the package and reduce the ingress of oxygen through package design. Package manufacturers have used numerous materials in the past with varying levels of success. New developments are addressing many of the problems that have prevented the widespread use of oxygen scavengers. An exploration into the types of scavenging techniques, both old and new, and a comparison of their performances will be undertaken. Examples of how these products can be used and the pros and cons of each will be presented. Lastly, experimental data will be presented to illustrate the effectiveness of using oxygen scavengers in packaging.
