New Flavor and Aroma Barrier Thermoplastic, Polylactide, 2001 Polymers Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Nicole Whiteman, Phillip DeLassus, Judy Gunderson--NatureWorks(TM) polylactide is a new family of thermoplastics from annually renewable resources like corn that has been developed for packaging applications. Since polylactide (PLA) is a glassy polymer at room temperature, large molecules cannot move easily through the polymer matrix; making PLA an excellent barrier material for flavor/aroma/solvent molecules. Experimental data show PLA is a medium barrier to permanent gases. In addition, PLA’s glass transition temperature is near 55° C and this makes it an ideal material for heat sealing. The combination of excellent barrier and heat sealability makes this an ideal choice for optimal placement next to the packaging contents.
