Waterbased Primers For Extruded Polypropylene, 2001 Polymers Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

Richard B. Allen--Because of its unique properties, polypropylene (PP) could enjoy a larger market if it was used as an extrudate in extrusion coating. Unfortunately, PP does not adhere well to most surfaces including film, foil and paper and ink. Adhesives are available that enhance extrudate-substrate bonding; however, these are usually solvent based and require special post-application heating equipment. Presented in this paper is the performance of new, developmental, waterbased primers for extruded PP. They offer the ability to prepare new structures for demanding applications by extrusion coating and also provide an alternative to adhesive lamination of films.
