Quiet Unwinding Blown Stretch Film, 2001 Polymers Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings
G. G. Luneau--Most blown stretch film today exhibits loud and obnoxious unwinding noise. This noise is attributed to the low molecular weight PIB (polyisobutylene) in the film. The PIB has been added by the filmmaker to achieve the necessary film re-cling. But PIB has the bad side effect of creating noise when film is unwound from the roll. A pelletized LLDPE-based product is now available which does not contain PIB. The resulting film exhibits good re-cling, as well as whisper quiet unwinding, much like the majority of today™s cast stretch films. Additionally, this product has approval for use in food contact applications (some restrictions apply). It is handled in bulk railcars and in boxes. The product should be blended at approximately 50 / 50 with an LLDPE, with an LDPE, or with blends of the two, for monolayer film. It can also be used in multilayer film as described in the body of the paper.
