A New High Speed Sensor to Measure Thin Coatings on Metallic/Shiny Substrates, 2003 PLACE Conference & GLOBAL HOT MELT Symposium
Traditional online measurement sensors fall short when used to perform online measurements of oil, lacquer and
polymer coating weight on metal substrates. Nucleonic gauges use a differential technique, measuring the product
both before and after the coating is applied; this approach results in cumulative errors that are unacceptable. This
new sensor, using Near- and Mid-Infrared technology, measures the coating directly with a single sensor. Unlike
other infrared sensors, it is immune to optical interference effects, providing a level of measurement accuracy not
achievable with any other online measurement approach. This NMIR sensor is also extremely fast and provides
excellent profile resolution, making it perfectly suited for high speed lacquer and extrusion coating measurement
and control.
