Utilizing Quantitative and Qualitative infrared Analysis for Multilayer Films in the Production Area, 2003 PLACE Conference & GLOBAL HOT MELT Symposium

Multi-layer films are increasing in popularity because of the variety of property traits they offer. Along with the increasing complexity comes the difficulty of analyzing individual layers within the film. Typically, laboratory analyses such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), solvent extraction and gravimetric measurements, optical microscopy, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) are used to analyze these structures. However, some of these techniques are expensive, somewhat time consuming and typically require a trained technician or chemist.

For production personnel, time can save or waste money. A simple, rapid analysis on the production floor can be invaluable. Many of the polymers used in multi-layer films such as nylon, EVOH, EVA, and polyethylene have a characteristic absorbance in the mid infrared range. With the advent of small, rugged fixed filter infrared analyzers a measurement can be done in the production area with the film intact and a single button pressed for the result.

Portable fixed filter infrared analyzers can be used to perform a wide variety of analyses. Examples to be discussed include determination of layer gauge for internal layers of a multi-layer film, formulation discrimination and raw material verification.
