Tailoring the Properties of Reactive Pu Hot Melts, 2003 PLACE Conference & GLOBAL HOT MELT Symposium

Dimerized fatty acids were used as polyols in polyurethane reactive hot melt adhesives, to study their effect on the properties. The work has shown that the materials show favourable mechanical properties with high elongation and flexibility. The dimerates exhibit excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates, due to its unique combination of properties such as wetting, absence of shrinkage and low polarity. The dimerates also allow for tailoring of the balance between open time and setting time. Last but not least, the dimer based adhesives are very resistant against hydrolysis and thermo-oxidation.
