Improved Technique for Monitoring the Grease Permeation through Substrates, 2003 PLACE Conference & GLOBAL HOT MELT Symposium
The current techniques for monitoring the permeation of grease through substrates can require extensive amounts of
labor and time. The current ASTM technique requires the laborious visual monitoring of the sample by lab
personnel. This method requires continuous attention and provides results with accuracy relative to the frequency of
inspections made. In an effort to reduce the time and man hours, the sample is often tested under the elevated
temperatures to speed up the permeation process. By doing so, the correlation between the data acquired and real
world performance of the package could be misleading. This paper will discuss an affordable way of modifying the
current method that will allow for more accurate testing and requires less man hours. By developing such a
technique, the grease breakthrough time can be determined more accurately, and testing under milder, more realistic
conditions can be conducted.
