Influence of the Average Particle Size of Aragonitic Precipitated Calcium Carbonate on Coated Paper Properties, 2003 Spring Technical Conference Proceedings
The average particle size of acicular aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) influenced the optical and surface properties of a coated paper. The optimal average particle size for opacity for acicular aragonitic PCC was
equal to the optimum predicted by Zeller of 0.4-0.55µm with prismatic calcite PCC. The coated paper smoothness improved, and sheet gloss and print gloss both increased, as the average particle size of the aragonite PCC became
smaller. Although the sheet gloss increase with decreasing average particle size agreed with previous work with calcite PCC, the print gloss increase with decreasing average particle size with aragonite PCC was opposite of that observed with prismatic calcite PCC. However, with both calcite and aragonite, the ink set rate increased as the average particle size of the PCC decreased.
