The performance of novel cationic styrene maleimide resins (SMA Imides) have been evaluated in wet-end papermaking systems. In this paper, retention of fines and fillers, sizing efficiency, linting and strength of paper in the presence of different hydrophobicity levels of SMA imide resins have been assessed. Benefits of styrene maleimide resins used in the wet-end of paper machines are numerous. High retention of fines and fillers is measured when SMA imide resins are used as a coagulant. Handsheets internally treated with SMA imide resins showed a decrease in paper lint, an enhancement of paper wet strength and slight sizing improvements. Differences in efficiency among SMA imide resins are also discussed.
