Modeling Refining and its Impact on Paper Quality, 2003 Spring Technical Conference Proceedings

Refining is the most recognized papermaking tool to control paper quality. Unfortunately, this tool is not used up to its potential because the present level of understanding of the refining process itself and of its impact on paper quality made on paper machine is not currently sufficient to develop valid universal equation(s) to predict and optimize paper quality. This is due to fact that:

  1. properties of refined fibers are still mostly measured by freeness, which is a control tool which is not intended to fully describes papermaking potential of fibers, and
  2. standard laboratory handsheet testing is an inadequate and poor simulation of paper machine.
On the other hand, most production paper machines do not have an adequate level of proper in-process on–line sensors to develop empirical equation(s) on paper machine in the industrial environment.
